Abstract

Because geographic data are recurrent elements in documents stored in bibliographic databases, it is necessary to develop tools to standardize their codification. In this paper, a systematic catalogue of geographic codes, assigned to countries, territories, continents, oceans and regions, is described. The catalogue defines the geographic relationships between codes and is organized in such a way that no specialized geographic knowledge is required to use it succesfully for indexing and retrieval purposes.
