The old controversy between free and controlled language becomes specially bitter when dealing with political information and current events bases. This study questions thc suitability of applying a thesaurus to the task of document analysis of daily and weckly current events press. The conceptual richness of these documents goes well beyond the appropriateness of applying a thcsaurus to such changing reality. Nevertheless, success is guaranteed with combined search on free-text and by means of descriptors. The adoption of both procedures assuress trategy which, due to its complementary characteristic, seems to be most advisahle when treating this sort of documentation.
