Alternative levels in bibliographic standards

Recent developments towards the establishment of simplified international standards book description ISBD (M) as alternative level and proposals concerning minimal bibliographic MARC formats are reviewed. Factors involved in this approach and background are also analyzed. Mínimal level cataloguing practices in United States and Britain are briefly summarised. Current status of minimal level standards and practices in Spain is described. Some comments on brief bibliographic records and library standardization and its current needs have been included.
