A discussion on the poor literature about the information or reference services in the Spanish libraries is presented. Two basic aspects are surveyed. Firstly the user-librarian relationship. The literature on the reference process is summarised, though not intending to be exhaustive. The need to evaluate and analyze the reference questions is emphasized. Sorne practical ways of anticipation to the user questions, i.e . needs, are recommended. Secondly, the problem of the emplacement and design of a reference post is examined. Two questions arise from this study. The staffing of the reference desk by professional or non professional and the selection of the reference and bibliographic works.
