A theoretical and practical survey about the two level description and the analytical cataloguing is presented, based on the correct comprehension of bibliographic unit and its inter-relation with other units of a varied nature. This concept is analysed in terms of the terminology used. The different ways of implementation that the two level description and analytical cataloguing can adopt from the point of view of physical, bibliographical and informative characteristics of the document are studied. A comparative chart between the particular characteristics of the document and the method of analysis to be applied in each case is shown.
