Use of Semantic Technologies in the Digital Collections of Libraries, Archives, and Museums in Spain

Hispana is established as a national aggregator, directory, and content harvester for Europeana, the European platform for heritage collections. The coordination of various digital collections through Hispana is carried out using the OAI-PMH protocol. In this context, a study has been conducted on the application of semantic technologies in Hispana’s digital collections, with a case study focusing on Spain’s heritage collections. To achieve this, all available collections in Hispana have been gathered and classified to establish a typology of the different digital collections. These collections have been examined both from a general perspective and through the quantification of exclusively heritage-related collections.
Once this classification was established, the methodology included an analysis of the number and type of collections that declare an OAI-PMH URL in Hispana. Finally, the study examines the evolution of heritage collections between 2016 and 2024 concerning the use of semantic technologies based on the OAI protocol, which has shown a clear improvement in its application. Over these eight years, an increase has been observed both in the number of heritage collections hosted in Hispana and in the effectiveness of OAI-PMH protocol implementation.
