Citation patterns in Spanish research about teaching on mathematics

Abstract


This paper offers a longitudinal background of citation trends in the field of mathematics education using as population for study the doctoral dissertations of this field contained in the Spanish database TESEO during the years 1975 to 2002. In this way, we developed a longitudinal study over several characteristics of the bibliography included in these dissertations such as: citation language, bibliographic resources and cited average life (obsolescence index). As relevant findings of this study we would emphasize the existence of a pattern of 200 references by thesis, the predominance of the English language in the journals, while the Spanish language prevails in books. Two journals (Journal for Research in Mathematics Education and Educational Studies in Mathematics) are extensively the most mentioned.
