This study is an attempt to establish a methodology for the evaluation of information retrieval with search engines in the World Wide Web. The method, which is explained in detail, adapts traditional techniques for evaluating web peculiarities and makes use of precision and recall scores, based on the relevance of the first 20 results retrieved. This method has been successfully applied to the evaluation of ten different search engines.
