Qualitative research and its applications in library and information Science

Abstract

We explore qualitative techniques in order to find out those which can be useful in Library and Information Science research, those topics which are more susceptible to be approached from a qualitative point of view, and whether there is a correlation between the technique employed and the matter discussed. We analyse both the topics and techniques applied in the research articles published in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science between 1995 and 1997, and in those appeared in the Journal of Documentation and Library and Information Science Research from 1993 up to 1997. Most of the articles which employ qualitative metbods deal with user behaviour in information retrieval, that is, exploring his behaviour when employing an automated system or focusing in the tactics different user groups adopt when solving their information needs. Finally, the main characteristics that define qualitative research are summarised.
