Z39.50 standard based systems technology offers many quite promising possibilities for the future: systems connectivity, retrieval of high structured information, redefinition of applications (as search engines, agents and so forth), integration within proprietary software, online or CD-ROM publishing systems, protocols... However, the situation nowadays is very little advantageous in order to develop Z39.50 based systems. This paper analyses the range of possibilities offered by the mentioned standard
