Resumen

En el presente trabajo se estudian los orígenes, naturaleza funcional e historia de la designación general de material (DGM) como elemento de la descripción bibliográfica destinado a la identificación de los materiales no librarios. Se muestra su aparición y evolución en el código AACR y en las normas ISBD. Se analiza la problemática generada en torno a la interpretación y uso de la DGM, centrada en la ausencia de una definición formal del concepto de clase de material, la emergencia de recursos con características múltiples y la confusión terminológica. Se exponen los factores concurrentes en la transformación actual de la DGM, situados en el contexto de la revisión de las AACR2 y la aparición del modelo conceptual FRBR. Finalmente, se presentan las iniciativas en curso relacionadas con la redefinición de la DGM y su adaptación al entorno digital, desarrolladas por la IFLA, el IME-ICC, y el JSC, responsable del estándar RDAResource Description and Access.
