Electronic networks are making possible a revolutionary change in the most traditional scientific communication means: the appearance of electronic journals. In this article we study the existing ones, analysing them from three points of view. Firstly, we present a series of definitions proposed by several authors. Secondly; as for the sources of selection, we make a revision of the most important directories at present. Finally, as for their characteristic s, we revise formats, the most used transmision means and the possible indicators to be used for their evaluation.
