The origin of the electronic information services Current Awareness Service-Individual Article Supply: journal versus article

The electronic information services CAS-IAS, acronym of current awareness service-individual article supply, arise in the last eighties. Many companies and institutions, related to the international serials industry, meeting the increasing demand of current information and individual articles of scientific, technical and academic journals, have decided to diversify their offer of information products and services. This kind of electronic information services have been input in the international communication networks. This paper analyzes the reasons which have given rise to the growth of this new industry, establishes the characteristics of these services and gives a non-exhaustive list of the different current awareness and individual article supply services emerged in the last years.
