This paper deals with the state of the art of science and technology statistics and indicators and the processes to obtain them. Some of the international organisations in charge to specify guidelines to reach international comparison, are presented. The main indicators used in science policy are presented: input indicators, those are, R&D investment (government budget, expenditure, and human resources on R&D); output indicators, R&D results (scientific production, citation analysis, patents, technology balance of payments). Indicators related to technological innovation are also considered. Comparative data on R&D indicators for some countries are presented.
