The papers about bibliometric indicators used for evaluating the scientific process are analysed. The most commonly used are explained in detail: qualitative indicators (peer review); scientific activity indicators (publication counting, authors productivity, collaborations); relations between authors (reference coupling); works impact (citation analysis); source impact (impact factor, immediacy index, journals influence); subject relationahip (co-references, co-citations and co-word analysis). A critical analysis about the shortcomings of bibliometric indicators is made concluding that their use should be limited to homogeneous groups and applied with caution.
