The hologram as a document and unique information resource

The article addresses the theoretical and conceptual aspects of holography and makes reference to earlier references in the literature relating it to information sciences. The specific characteristics of the hologram as a document-like source are analyzed from different typologies, presented as annexes. To date, no such analysis has been made in any of the consulted works. The author examines the differences between holograms and other information resources and storage systems, in addition to the photograph, the type of document most similar to the hologram. The article attempts to inform and to orient the information professional in the appropriate use of this resource, in order that the potential of holograms for information storage and retrieval can be exploited in the service of the mission of libraries, museums and documentation centers in general.
