The paper presents the first results of a comparative study done by the Library System (SIBUC) and the Industrial and System Engineering Department of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The objective of the study is the development of indicators for University Libraries to compare themselves and to identify their relative position in relation to other peer or leader institutions at the national, regional and international level. With the collaboration of four Chilean and two Latin-American prestigious Universities data weal obtained. In adition, information regarding ten American Universities was obtained from the online version of US News. Nineteen indicators for the following three main areas: budget, relationship between resources/Faculty and Studens, and Efficiency on the use of resources were developed so that the institutions, for bench-marking purpose, are able to evaluate their own strategic position and to improve their weaknesses and maintain their strengths. Finally, benefits that can be obtained from the use of the nineteen indicators are stated for SIBUC, as well as for other Latin-American University Libraries.
