This paper analyses the research activity of Spanish public universities during the first decade of the 21st century, based on data of R & D collected by the IUNE Observatory from official sources. We analyse whether the age, size (measured by number of faculty members or number of students) and student-teacher ratio of universities generate significant differences between research activity indicators, distinguishing between recognition (number of 6-year research periods), scientific activity (production, collaboration, impact, visibility), innovation, competitiveness, and training capacity. The importance of the size of the university (number of teachers) is confirmed, as the largest universities had better indicators, and the effect of both the age of the university and the student-teacher ratio was nullified.
