In this paper we propose to develop a methodological and conceptual framework to define the main variables and dimensions to study the academic activities on open science in which Spanish institutions are involved. We present a battery of indicators to operationalize the analysis and study the activity patterns of the different institutional sectors involved in these activities. Using a scientometric methodology, the national and international projects obtained in competitive calls related to open science, and scientific publications, have been analyzed. The results obtained show a significant participation in European projects, one of the main sources of funding. While universities are the predominant sector in national projects, in European projects the institutional diversity is greater. Scientific publications show universities as the main signatories with a high rate of leadership. Topics related to open data, open innovation, open access and citizen science stand out. There is a high proportion of open documents (58%), which increases in the case of publications derived from projects (62%).
